Spent today helping a friend with his course work. I hate that I can nearly teach a course but can barely pass it. Maybe one day I'll discover a place where you can get qualifications by demonstrating ability.
Most academics seem to view focus as a skill rather than an ability. It is always hard to admit that your achievements are due more to birthright than effort; the simple fact is that most people work very hard in life and barely tread water.
But does it matter? I sometimes wish I was born stupid but focused instead of the useless combination I was blessed with; other times I consider myself lucky. Then there are the times I suddenly realise the succesful person giving me advice is just a moron who could pass courses and I don't know whether I'd rather be in their shoes or not.
I am disabled, just in a way that most people think is imaginary. But a lot of other people have disabilities as well, and some of them even overcome it.

Taking up Russell Davies' challenge just got interesting - it seems most police aren't really big on people taking photos of rail sites near power stations...
So I'm taking this photo:
They were more amused than anything, thankfully. After showing them the other photos my camera contained, I think they dismissed me as a security threat. They were actually intrigued by my description of the challenge; one of the women saying "I should do it, I'm pretty boring."
Anyway, they have my details, so this is another one that may be feature a follow-up.
To ruin the story, it wasn't the best photo of the day. That prize has to go to this little gem, provided by some guys I was chatting to on the way home. They work at the Blood Bank, they had a crapload of dry ice, they left a bunch on their seat.
It's pretty detailed (I love my A610, macro mode ftw) so take a look at the full version.
And here I was looking for a 'Post' button.
This is my second attempt at a blog - I started one on blogger, but the slowness irritated me to the point of giving up. Not 'near to the point' - I actually gave up. I will repost the few things I wrote here when I'm in a more e-house-cleaning mood.
I decided to re-attempt this whole blogging business after reading this article by Russell Davies and being genuinely inspired. After three hours writing nothing for an assignment in which I am meant to explain how I Exercise Initiative, inspiration is an unexpected thing. I already followed the first step, sort of; I took a photo on the weekend, but put it on flickr today.
